The Sunday Drive - 11/10/2024 Edition [#136]
Musings and Meanderings of a Financial Provocateur
đđŒ Hello friends,
Greetings from Atlanta, GA, where weâve come to spend some time with our newly relocated daughter so she can show us all around her new (but hopefully not permanent) home. Letâs enjoy a leisurely, Southern Sunday Drive around the Internet.

A week ago, the world lost a true musical legend. Quincy Jones, known to his friends simply as âQâ, passed away at the age of 91. During his career which spanned over 75 years, Quincy produced artists such as Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Chaka Khan, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Patti Austin, James Ingram, and many, many more.
I know itâs not the normal vibe youâre used to seeing, but I thought this interview was worth sharing. In it, Quincy talks about overriding Michael Jacksonâs wishes on the 1981 hit, Donât Stop âtil You Get Enough. It is an important reminder of the vital role the producer plays. It is their job to take the raw talent that an artist brings to a song, and to shape it into the final product. There has been no other producer in memory who did that better than Quincy Jones. RIP, sir.
đ Â Quote of the Weekâ
âWe don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.â
â George Bernard Shaw
đ Â Chart of the Week
To quote J.C. Parets of All Star Charts, the source of this weekâs Chart:
During bear markets, the leaders ultimately catch down to the laggards. During bull markets, the laggards end up catching up to the leaders. Which one do you think we're in right now?
The broadening out of equity market participation beyond the largest of the large Tech companies is something weâve been talking a lot about over the last several months.
With the S&P 500 making all-time highs this week, weâre starting to see mid and small cap stocks also making new highs as well.
Given the rather rich valuations of the mega-tech names as compared to the more attractively valued smaller parts of the market, there is valuation support to help this broadening out of performance to continue.
