Sunday Drive - 08/21/2022 Edition
👋🏻 Hello friends,
Greetings from Villanova University! Take it easy and enjoy this week's leisurely Sunday Drive around the internet.
Vibin'
The Vibe of the Week is an ode to Back to School season, which for our family holds much significance this year. This weekend, in yet another "This is the last time we will....", we are moving our son into his college apartment for the final time as he prepares for his senior year at Villanova - Go Cats, Baby! ✌🏻. It's an oldie, but a goodie, and definitely feels appropriate this weekend. Enjoy Don't Stop from Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album.
Quote of the Week
"Humans don’t mind hardship, in fact they thrive on it; what they mind is not feeling necessary. Modern society has perfected the art of making people not feel necessary." - Sebastian Junger

💭 Thought Bubble of the Week
This section of the Sunday Drive is intended to serve up seedling ideas which may ultimately grow into more fully developed pieces to be published on NewLanternAdvisors.com. I'd be most grateful if you'd share any thoughts, suggestions or feedback.
This week's Thought Bubble is a brief one, but also a teaser for a more expansive exploration of a topic that, in my view, is often inadequately discussed by financial advisors - risk management, particularly in the realm of investing. Too often, advisors are lazy and backward looking in how they explain risk management, i.e. volatility reduction, to their clients. (See the Chart of the Week above).
More to come in the future on this very important area of a client's investment experience...
Until then, don't stop thinking about tomorrow.
Interesting Drive-By's
🤔 The Biggest Life Event That No One Talks About - Retirement is more than a transition from the daily grind to a life of leisure. It is a major turning point in our relationship with money. For decades we save and invest, watching as our pile of money grows. In retirement, we must flip a switch and begin spending down hard-earned assets. The good habits we formed while working and saving turn against us and inhibit our ability to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
💡 How Will the “Un-retirement” Trend Affect You? - Welcome to the land of the un-retired — folks who thought they were leaving the work world only to return because they sorely missed something about it, besides the money. These people in their 50s through 80s retired on pensions or savings — or both — but ultimately woke up to the fact there’s more to life than watching Florida sunsets.
👍🏻 The Benefits of Hiring Women Returning from a Career Break - Interesting interview with Yvon Chouinard, Founder of Patagonia. When asked the question, "If you were starting a company today, what would you do to create the best possible workplace?”, his answer was compelling:
“…..I would search out older women as employees. Ones that have already raised families and are looking for something to do. These people have lived with a budget. They are aggressive. They are honest. You can’t find better employees. They are one of the most underused resources in America.”
