The Sunday Drive - 04/09/2023 Edition
👋🏻 Hello friends,
Happy Easter! Let's take it easy and enjoy a leisurely Sunday Drive around the internet.
Vibin'
The original Rocky movie came out in 1976 when I was 12 years old - not yet a man, but not really a child either. I’ve always said that Rocky Balboa was my real father. I learned much of what it means to be a man from the amazing character that Sylvester Stallone brought to life. Tenacity and belief in oneself - even when others do not - are important lessons that I brought with me into adulthood and that I hope that I’ve instilled in my children. This week I’m vibin’ to selections from the Rocky soundtrack.
💭 Quote of the Week
📈 Chart of the Week
The Chart of the Week shows the annual returns for the S&P 500 going back to 1980. Despite intra-year declines which average 14.3%, 32 of 43 years showed positive returns for the full year. Another way to look at this chart is to vividly see what equity market volatility looks like over time and consider the importance of staying invested when the market is down so investors can participate in the recovery on the way back up.
🚙 Interesting Drive-By's
🤔 Relationship Liquidity - They say we’re the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. The same is true of the content we consume. You are the average of the 5 writers, 5 albums, or 5 artists that you spend the most time with.
🤯 AI Doomsday for People Who Don’t (Yet) Wear Fedoras - Eliezer Yudkowsky is the fedora-wearing AI researcher famous for saying repeatedly that AI will kill us all. If you simplify the doom arguments, they all spring from one fundamental problem:
It’s dangerous to build something smarter than you without fully understanding how it thinks.
🤓 Is Your Job Safe? - Do we need more programmers, or are many of them going to be broke in a few years? The answer to both questions is yes.
💡 Idea Olympics - The Idea Olympics started as just that… an idea. An organic, honest-to-Sam, this, then how bout this, but what about that, oh yeah this, pinball of an idea in the very human brain of a very human woman.
📞 Weekly Call 2 Action
Giving consideration to the Chart of the Week above, the Call 2 Action this week is a simple one. Make a choice. Do we as investors endure the volatility that has historically been associated with investing in stocks, or do we seek new and innovative ways to mitigate the risk inherent in our portfolios? If you choose the latter, please reach out to me at 855-918-5300 and let’s chat. There’s a lot we could talk about.
